For organizations that serve families living in poverty, a misinformed decision can squander limited resources or overlook an opportunity to help a family in need. That is why Grameen Foundation promotes the Progress out of Poverty Index, or PPI. Poverty data can help an organization’s management team make better decisions in the interest of the poor. However, PPI data is only useful if the organization has adopted best practices to ensure accuracy and the management team is willing to respond to findings.

I recently sat down with management at a leading microfinance institution (MFI) in the Philippines to talk about targeting. Like many MFIs, this one is deeply committed to helping the poor through the provision of transformative financial and non-financial services, and it uses the PPI to determine how many new clients are poor. They are however unsatisfied with their current poverty outreach and would like to further deepen outreach to the poor or increase the participation of poor in their program. They wonder how they can further use the PPI to deepen their outreach and they came to a conclusion that they can use it for client targeting. They ponder how to use the PPI for effective targeting and we supported them to understand it better.

Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation (NWTF) in the Philippines was one of the first microfinance institutions (MFIs) to pilot, test and adopt the PPI. Four years later, NWTF staff shared lessons they have learned with a PPI newcomer in the region, KOMIDA of Indonesia.

Following the PPI Data Analysis training, Mary Jo Kochendorfer and Cris Lomboy joined other discussion leaders at a Social Investing Workshop. Their panel, Opportunities and Challenges in Social Investment, focused on shared experiences among MFIs and technical assistance providers in promoting social performance. The panel examined the role of social investment as an incentive for increasing social performance activities among organizations.

Mary Jo Kochendorfer and Cris Lomboy from Grameen Foundation’s Social Performance Management Center launched a two-week training tour for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the Philippines and India. In Manila, the first stop, the team trained members of the Philippines Social Performance Management (SPM) Peer Learning Community (PLC) to analyze data gathered by the Progress out of Poverty Index™ (PPI™).
